Intentional Mindset:

As my journey in Career Mentorship flies through the first semester into the second there is a lot to do with being intentional. Being intentional means acting with purpose and awareness, making deliberate choices that align with your values and goals. It means being mindful of your actions and their impact on yourself and others.

I struggled to find a placement throughout half of my time this semester. Which allowed me to apply intentional learning goals that are beyond acquiring knowledge. It involves understanding, applying, and internalizing information, allowing it to shape your thoughts, beliefs, and actions. It's about actively engaging with the material, asking questions, seeking deeper understanding, and applying what you've learned in practical ways. With this information I kept in mind that I need to have a back up plan just in case my first choice of mentoring didn’t go as planned. As for that, I did my own research. I learned to understand what else I may be interested in that I could go out and mentor underneath. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and that has always piqued my interest. So I reached out to her Oncology doctor and was able to land myself a mentor on November 9th. I mentor this date because it meant I only have thirty-five days to accomplish 50 hours for the first semester.

Columbus Oncology and Hematology

Now out of those thirty-five days I also have a part time job after school Monday through Friday. Due to me being behind on hours I had to prioritize my work or mentorship hours. Since this hurdle created a big conflict and the place I was mentoring at, Columbus Oncology and Hematology, was only open till 5pm I wasn't sure on what to do. After thinking long and hard I came to the conclusion that I’d mentor 3 hours every Tuesday and Thursday with doing some additional 2 hour online visual shadowing to achieve my goal of 50 hours towards the end of the semester.

Mentoring Experience:

Oncology
Hematology

This week I have finally been able to find a mentor. I will be mentoring under Dr. Thomas Sweeney in the Oncology and Hematology field on Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm to 5pm. I am hoping to learn more about cancers and how to find lumps throughout the cancer sites in the body along with side effects indicating cancer. With the experience I learn, I plan to use it during medical school. I can’t wait to start mentoring.
