Introduction:

Hello everyone! My name is Tasnim Farah and I am a current senior at Hilliard Davidson High School. I have decided to take a class called Career Mentorship which is a course offered through Hilliard City Schools. In this course, students gain real-world experience by mentoring within their chosen profession. I am using this space as an opportunity to share my experiences in the career field of my choosing. As I write my blogs throughout the year I hope to learn if this is the correct career field for me.

Reflection:

Unfortunately, since I am not 18 yet I have had a hard time getting Nationwide Children's to allow me to mentor with them. Instead I tried to reach out to my Central Ohio Primary Care, but also got denied due to their technical issues they are facing at the moment. I decided to discuss with some of my teachers that I have a good friendship with and they were able to find me two Nationwide Children's doctors who are willing to let me mentor under them regardless of my age. Over the weekend I took time out of my day to reach out to them hoping to see what opportunity I can get. With this NCH internship coming up, grit and persistence is very important. Grit is shown as determination and resilience, which are some valued qualities. Whereas persistence demonstrates commitment and willingness to overcome challenges and keep working towards the goals presented right in front of you.

Before I started my whole NCH process I need to get my “Agreement for Intern High School Student,” “Mentee Code of Conduct,” and “NCH Documentation Checklist.” This is because it sets out the structure of the relationship between you and your mentor, and the roles and responsibilities of both parties. It helps to provide important information and ensure a smooth onboarding process. Since I do not have an internship I am using my time to research more about my career. I have chosen to watch shows and surgical videos online related to Pediatric Surgery. As for my mentorship hours I have taken the events my Career Mentorship teacher has provided for us at the moment to gain hours. Hopefully by the next week or so I hear back from NCH or the doctors I have contacted.
